I started this book late last night, and at 3 am forced myself to put it down, about 80 pages from the end, because I was too tired to fully appreciate the remainder at that hour. Picked it up after a few hours of sleep, and sped through the conclusion. This engrossing memoir features a broad panorama of family experiences from the ghetto in Russia in the 1880's; to the solo immigration to the US by the family matriarch when she was a child; her daughter's life as a daughter, mother and grandmother (pre and post Betty Friedan); the author's mother's life as a member of the first class at Brown which included women; and finally the author's life from the 1990's to present. Central to it all is the author's grandmother, the source of most of the family stories, who had a very close relationship with the author, that involved frequent calls, texts, emails, voice messages and get togethers. The work covers a lot of historical ground, and is laugh out loud funny at many points. From Russia to Brooklyn to Long Island and the post-war baby and building boom, to Manhattan, Palm Beach, Martha's Vineyard, San Francisco and LA, the family has left its indelible stamp on the American experience. This was such a rich reading experience.
